Ilivatos Villa

Villa Ilivatos is situated in Oia, Santorini’s most picturesque village and one of the most photogenic spots in the world. Approximately 3,700 years ago, when Santorini’s volcano erupted, the island transformed and acquired its natural, untouched beauty, featured by steep cliffs and unique beaches. Today, Oia regularly ranks among the world’s “most outstanding places to visit”, thanks to its photogenic sceneries, rich history, and cosmopolitan charm.

In ancient Greece, the word Ilivatos referred to steep, rocky cliffs that could only be reached by the rays of the sun. It was thus used to describe the place where the throne of Zeus was located, at the highest peak of Mount Olympus.

Echoing the myth that inspired its name, villa Ilivatos is situated on a steep slope hovering about 165m above sea level, right at the rim of a volcanic caldera. The villa’s privileged location offers viscerally breathtaking views of the Aegean that extend all the way to the neighboring island of Thirasia.

Originally built in 1999, this four-bedroom residence is a modern interpretation of Santorini’s vernacular architecture that calls for cube-shaped dwellings piled one on top of the other to resist the gale-force winds. The villa comprises two independent living spaces and a guest studio, all bundled together and laid out in three levels. The irregular form of the structure has been utilized to create space for terraces that are fitted with lounge and dining settings to encourage indoor-outdoor living.

Inside the house, the ambience is breezy and welcoming. The spotless white-washed walls are pierced by blue windows that modulate the influx of sunlight while framing spectacular views of the sea beyond. Mindful of the island’s understated aesthetic, the décor forgoes dazzling distractions in favor of unpretentious charm, allowing the views to take center stage. Natural materials and traditional furniture are used to recreate the intentional informality of a loving summer home, an island haven that invites you to walk around barefoot and spend lazy afternoons soaking up the rugged, captivating beauty of the volcanic landscape.
