Ilivatos in ancient Greek means high, steep, of rock, that can only be reached by the sun. Ilivatos is situated in the heart of Oia and was built in 1999 at an altitude of 165 m on the southwest side of Santorini Oia . The house is built on the very edge of the Caldera. In the old times the house was used as an observatory and command center.
The three level terraces of Ilivatos are a unique architectural element, one that is not observed very often in the buildings in Oia. They provide 360° views, you are able to see most of Oia and you have panoramic view of the Caldera and volcano. The decoration combines tradition with the functionality and requirements of modern times.
Oia has several cultural attractions like the Maritime Museum which houses a small library, items from the maritime life of the area, and the vestiges of a Venetian fortress. Many artists fell in love with the area and settled there. For that reason, the village of Oia has many art galleries.
There is a car park as you enter the village (known as Kinotita) and it is well worth parking here and enjoying the walk. There are many craft shops, cafes and restaurants to accommodate all kinds of tastes.
Oia also has a small port, Ammoudi, which can be reached either by car or by a set of 214 steps leading down. Also in Amoudi you may find many traditional fish Taverns. Small boats can take you opposite, to the island of Thirassia. The beach of Armeni is also located near by and can be accessed by small boats only.
The volcano from here is much less imposing than from Fira and indeed looks somewhat flatter. Continuing along the narrow passageway the view from Goylas is tremendous. This spot is ideal for enjoying the sights of the patchwork town with its variety of whites, blues, oranges and pinks. There’s also the sight of a windmill and down below is Amoudi Bay. It is some distance to get there and climbing back up the steps takes a lot of energy.
From this area the views of the sun setting are magnificent. Many tourists make the journey here just for the sunset .
